PETALING JAYA: Sungai Way New Village folk were awakened in the early hours of the morning by barking dogs to find that 12 cars in their neighbourhood had been smashed and broken into.

Village chief Ding Eow Chai, 54, said that some residents noticed a ruckus along Jalan SS9A/19 here at around 4am on Saturday but did not suspect anything amiss.

“Some of them came out to see what was going on but it was too dark to see anything.

“The next morning we saw that 12 cars parked along the road had their driver’s side windows smashed.

“I was surprised because I didn’t hear any car alarms go off,” he said, adding that the cars were mostly local models.

“They didn’t take much from the cars though, only some coins,” he said.

Ding, who has been the village chief since 2008, said that this was the first such incident in years for the Sungai Way New Village.

He suspected that it may have been the work of some youths.

“Once, six cars were broken into. But that was a very long time ago. I can’t remember when.

“Now 12 cars have been damaged, so it is very serious,” he said.

Kampung Tunku state assemblyman Lau Weng San said that the victims had lodged reports at the Sungai Way police station.

“They will have to pay a lot for the repairs, maybe around RM500 each,” said Lau.
