Carjacked near Tropicana

25/8/13

posted by Leeyiung Chou

After putting a ten-dollar bill into my wallet, i grabbed my groceries and walked towards my car. It was a Sunday afternoon (to be exact, Aug 24, around 1pm), shoppers from the neighbourhood gather here to run their weekly errands. The popularity of the grocery store (initials: JG, near tropicana golf club) could be seen from the number of cars parked in front of it. Some customers including me had to leave our cars by the curb below the slope because the designated parking lots were occupied.

I opened the passenger's car door and before I could chuck anything into the car, someone held both of my arms. I immediately turned around and asked " buat apa?" or what do you want. It was a fairly plump Malay fellow in his 30s who asked me to pay him money. "for what?" i asked. Another male, Indian, dressed up smartly with a white long sleeved shirt and a pair of black pants came walking towards us while holding a walkie talkie. He said "you parking sini perlu bayar!" if you parked your car here, you have to pay us. It did not make any sense to me because every other time I parked my car there, i never had to pay any money to anyone and the malay fellow was still grabbing my arm. And then I had the notion that he was trying to push me into the car.

Within a split second of thought, I shouted help repeatedly at the top of my lungs. It was the freakiest moment of my life. While resisting and doing anything I could to stop them from pushing me into the car including punching the fat guy in front of me, one of them grabbed my neck. While the fight was going on, I heard people shouting and cars honking (thanks people!). Before the other shoppers could run over and help, the robbers cum potential kidnappers snatched the car key, pushed me away and quickly hopped into the car. And then I saw one of them ignited the engine. Subconsciously, I thought I should stop them from getting away and so I got hold of the car door firmly and prayed that someone could do something, anything. But it was just a meager effort. Three big-sized fellows escaped with my car.

It was a great relief that I was not abducted and that I only got bruises and no major injuries. Before they got away, I noticed there was a light green colored car that was parked right behind my car which disappeared after the whole episode of car snatching incident. I also noticed that this gang of people did not even bother to cover their face. It's either because they did not want to raise any suspicions or they did not expect me to have escaped the attempted kidnapping. It was a well planned out, near perfect activity!

After this incident, I realized that you are on your own when things like this happen to you, many people would just stand there and stare, only a few good samaritans would actually help you even if they do not know you. Before you approach your car, remember to look around and be alert of any suspicious people lurking around. Things like this can happen anywhere, anytime of the day and to anyone. It's very important to stay calm and come up with the best solution using the resources around you. And most importantly, learn some self defense arts, trust me, your limbs could be your only weapons in this kind of situations.

Posted on 13 August 2013 - 03:20pm

KUANTAN (Aug 13, 2013): A woman escaped with slight injury after she was shot at by an unknown man in a carjacking attempt in Jalan Haji Ahmad here, early today.

Kuantan police chief ACP Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said the woman, Ruzelawati Basri, suffered injury in the right eye caused by glass fragments and was treated at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.

In the incident at about 4am, Ruzelawati, who was driving a Toyota Alphard (MPV) alone earlier left her Taman Mirama house and stopped for fuel at a petrol kiosk.

"After refueling, she stoped the Toyota Alphard in front of a restaurant in Jalan Haji Ahmad to phone her ex-husband in Putrajaya before approached by a man who arrived in a dark blue car.

"Ruzelawati said the man who was holding a pistol knocked on the car and ordered her to open the door and get out of the MPV. Shocked, she sped off and later heard the sound of breaking glass," he told reporters here today.

Mohd Jasmani said after a short distance, Ruzelawati,35, stopped the MPV near a restaurant in Jalan Haji Ahmad. The single parent whose last address is Precinct 9, Putrajaya is operating an optometry shop here.

"Initial police investigation found that a shot hit the left front door of the MPV. The motive is believed to be attempted carjacking," he added.

KUANTAN: A 15-year-old girl and her mother who had suffered a stroke, endured hours of not knowing how their situation would turn out when a man hijacked the car they were in.

During the 3pm incident two days ago, Nor Rafidah Abdul Rasol and her 53-year-old mother Hamiah Abd Majid were waiting for her father Abdul Rasol Mohd Tahir, 50, in their Honda Civic near a shopping complex at Jalan Tun Ismail here when a man entered the car and sat behind the wheel.

Rafidah said during the terror ride, the man who donned sunglasses and who spoke with a heavy Terengganu accent, nonchalantly engaged them in small talk.

"At first I thought he was my father's friend.

"I even thought he was joking when he asked us to leave the car.

"Fear sunk in when he started driving and my father was nowhere in sight.

"He took away my handphone and began to chatting with us as though he was talking to friends," Nor Rafidah said at their family home in Taman Balok Permai, Balok here yesterday.

She added that the man asked them what they they doing at the shopping complex, their background, Hamiah's condition and her father's whereabouts.

Halfway through the ride, a white car that had been driving ahead of them stopped as their car came to a halt near a housing area.

"The driver of the white car, who was also wearing sunglasses, came out and approached us.

"He then lifted my mother out of the car and asked me to come out.

"He put my mother down by the side of the road and handed me RM50 before they drove off in both cars," Nor Rafidah said, adding that a passer-by later came to their aid.

Rasol, who was with his daughter as she related her ordeal, said what was most important was the safety of his wife and daughter.

Hamiah and Nor Rafidah were waiting in the car with the engine running while he shopped for a mobile phone battery.

When he returned and found the car and his family members missing, he lodged a report at the district police headquarters.

The suspects are believed to be in their 30s and police are still investigating the matter.

Parents Leave Kid in Car and Car got Jacked

[Expert Car Thief ? Car Unlocked and Engine Running, How Difficult to Steal ?]

Wednesday February 13, 2013
Suspect an expert vehicle thief, say police

KUALA TERENGGANU: A 26-year-old who sped off with a sleeping child in Kemaman on Jan 23 is an expert vehicle thief and not a kidnapper, police said.

Terengganu CID chief Asst Comm K. Manoharan said the suspect, from Kampung Padang Luas, Besut, is linked to at least 16 vehicle thefts in Terengganu and Kelantan. He is suspected to be behind 12 motorcycle thefts in Besut and Pasir Puteh.

“Police are working on retrieving the stolen cars,” ACP Manoharan said.

The suspect, however, has no history of child kidnapping.

“We are not sure what he would have done with the child but it is good that we managed to catch him not long after the incident,” he said.

On Jan 23, the suspect drove off a Mitsubishi Storm that had been left unattended by a couple during an emergency toilet stop at a petrol station.

The couple left the car with their three-year-old child sleeping inside while its engine was running and its door unlocked.

The suspect drove off towards Dungun but was nabbed by police less than an hour later, 70km from the petrol station, following a short chase.

The three-year-old boy was unharmed and returned to the parents on the same day.
