KUANTAN: A 35-year old businesswoman narrowly escaped death when a gunman approached her Toyota Alphard and fired a shot at close range today.
However, the divorced mother of four who runs an optical store here, managed to step on the gas and sped off towards the main road and the bullet shattered her window screen.
Ruzelawati Basri of Lorong Sekilau, suffered injuries to her eye from the glass fragments and received treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here later.
In the 4am incident, the victim had earlier filled up her MPV at a petrol station and stopped about 50 metres away to make a phone call to her ex-husband in Putrajaya. The couple was divorced several months ago.
Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said the woman noticed a man getting out of a dark blue car and approached her.
"The suspect pointed a gun at her and knocked on the window to get her to open the door. Instead, she sped off, forcing him to fire a shot at her car.
"The bullet was later recovered from the front passenger's door panel.
"She continued driving for 200 meters before stopping in front of a 24-hour restaurant but waited for an hour before she could get out to seek for help," he said at a Press conference today.
He said the police were still investigating the motive behind the attack.
