MALACCA: A former debt collector was stabbed to death by an agent of a loan shark following a heated argument over outstanding collections.

Chong Piang Fong, 49, attempted to flee from his assailant but succumbed to a fatal stab on the left side of his chest at a house in Taman Malim Jaya, Malim here yesterday morning.

Neighbours alerted the police who found the victim lying face down covered in a pool of blood.

It is learnt that Chong had given up his job as a debt collector as he wanted to venture into business. Apparently, he had worked previously with another loan shark and the assailant wanted to discuss about the outstanding amounts collected from debtors which was purportedly withheld by Chong.

Their discussion turned into a fiery row and the assailant used a sharp weapon to stab him several times. Police believed a kitchen knife was used to stab the victim but had yet to recover the murder weapon.

State Deputy CID Chief Superintendent P.R. Gunarajan said the assailant had arrived at the house about an hour early to demand for the outstanding cash.

Supt Gunarajan said police had traced the 25-year-old suspect who was at a friend’s house in Kampung Lapan, Tengkera through the help of a witness.

Supt Gunarajan said police also detained three other men aged between 25 and 35 to help facilitate the probe.

“All four were under the influence of drugs,” he said, adding that the prime suspect was also found to have previous criminal records relating to drug offences and had served several prison terms in Perak several years ago.
