Snatch Thieves are Cops!

Despite lodging a police report on the matter on July 3, B Saravanan claims that the police have yet to take action against the errant police officers.

PETALING JAYA: A lorry driver lodged a police report last month claiming that one of the snatch thieves he caught red handed was none other than a police officer.

In the report lodged at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters on July 3, B Saravanan, 27, said that he was going out to lunch outside his office at Taman Mayang Jaya on that day, when he saw two men on a motorcycle trying to snatch a gold necklace from a foreign national.

“It was about 12 pm. I was going for lunch when I saw the thieves on a Yamaha LC bike attempting to snatch a necklace from an Indonesian lady.

“I immediately drove to the scene and rammed my car on their motorcycle, causing the duo to fall on the street,” said Saravanan.

He said that he got down from his car to face the thieves, getting into a scuffle with them. Unfortunately, the perpetrators overwhelmed him and even manage to snatch his gold chain.

Adding that he tried his level best to apprehend them, Saravanan decided to back off as one started throwing stones at his car while the other threatened him with a knife.

Saravanan subsequently called up the police, who later arrived at the area to take pictures of the crime scene.

Suspects turn out to be policemen

“At 1pm, one Corporal Zamrus called me up to Kelana Jaya police station, asking my assistance to identify the thieves, which I did about three hours later.

“I managed to identify both men during the identification parade. To my shock, Zamrus told me that one of the suspects was a police officer,” alleged Saravanan in the report.

When contacted today Saravanan said that both suspects were indeed police officers. Saravanan further claimed that the investigating officer, known as Inspector Hasbullah, tried to talk him out of lodging a police report.

“I saw them both walking in and out of the Kelana Jaya police station together. So when I got to know that the suspects were officers from the same station, I decided to lodge the report at the PJ police headquarters instead,” said Saravanan.

He added that he was called to the Kelana Jaya police station for a second time on July 19 for another identification parade.

“I identified them again but after that I received no information from the Kelana Jaya police station on the status of the investigation,” said Saravanan.

However FMT learned today evening that Saravanan has been asked to be present at the Kelana Jaya police station to give a statement later tonight.

No comment from district chief

A police source meanwhile told FMT that he has yet to receive any updates regarding the status of the two police officers.

“I am not sure if they have been transferred to another desk or department or they have been suspended from the force. They are attached to a different police station thus I did not get any updates regarding their status,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya district police chief, Arjunaidi Mohamed when contacted refused to comment on the matter.

“You have to check with the Selangor police headquarters. I can’t comment on this,” he said briefly.

Broad Daylight Theft - Ara Damansara

shared by Bev Stubbs

I wish to share with you an incident that occurred to me this afternoon, the 14th August, in PJU1A / 20b.

I am a retired UK expat who has been living in Ara Damansara for the past 3½ years.

Recently I have taken up cycling to combat the onset of those unwanted additional kilos and to build up my fitness.

So this afternoon at around 2.30, for the first time, instead of driving down to the shops I decided to ride my bike.

I took a rucksack to carry the chain I would use to attach my bike to a suitable anchor and unusually I placed my wallet (containing cash, ATM and credit cards), phone and house keys in the rucksack. I say unusually because my normal modus operandi would be to place my wallet and phone in separate pockets of my cargo pants and the keys in a side pocket. Today, however, I was not wearing cargo pants so they all went in the rucksack.

I slowly cycle down to the shops and found a suitable signpost pole to use as an anchor for the bike, on the corner of Jalan PJU1A/20b and 20c, which is in full view of all in the vicinity. I place the bike against the pole, took off my rucksack, removed the chain and placed the rucksack on the ground directly beside my feet. I proceeded to chain the bike to the pole and had only been there for a matter of one or two minutes when I became aware of a slight draught at my ankles. I looked down to see that my rucksack had disappeared. I looked up and saw a man with my rucksack running towards Jalan PJU1A/1 where his accomplice was waiting on a motorbike so that they could make their get away. I gave chase to the thief but I never had a chance to catch him as he had at least a 15 meter start on me.

This snatch was made in mid afternoon in broad daylight, with many people present who witnessed the incident and the rucksack was taken from right at my feet. A very audacious act, by people who obviously consider that the reward is worth the risk as there is little risk of getting caught.

I have been an expat for more years than I care to admit and have worked in many countries both in the Middle East and South East Asia. I have, with out doubt, enjoyed my time in Malaysia, which I believe is a very fortunate country endowed with friendly citizens, natural resources, dramatic scenery and for me a great climate so it is with sadness that my positive feeling for this country has been tainted by my experience to day.

I hope the above will help to make people aware of the dangers that lurk at all times and in some small way avert an incident similar to mine.

Best Regards

ROBBERY AT MCDONALDS @ CITTA MALL [ARA DAMANSARA]

There was a snatch case at McDonalds @ Citta Mall at 6am Tuesday Morning. Not sure what happened after that.

There are so many guards around there guarding the entrance and exit of Citta Mall! Are we really relaxed that robbers & thieves are targeting our area (Ara Damansara) as easy prey?! Not to mention also that on August 5, Restoran Kapitan (Ara Damansara) was robbed AGAIN by a group of men with parang 4:45am in the morning! What has become to this place?! I remember the first time I shift in into Ara Damansara, it was a peace and safe place! Even robbers targeting our area! Please be VERY VERY careful!

Hi Admin,
As I was on my way to work earlier, i saw this suspicious motorist in the middle (red helmet) trailing the family on the left bike. The lady on the left bike had a big handbag with her and I suspect these guys were trying to snatch it. They kept trailing this lady for quite a long time (she was holding tight to her bag) before i lost sight of them both. Not sure if those two guys are snatch thieves or not but I felt like sharing just for awareness.

My husband Mohd Ikhram Merican was almost a victim of snatch thieves this morning at around 10am right in front of Lincoln University College in SS25. He was waiting for a colleague and a motorcyclist got a little too close to him. The thief grabbed his arm to get his mobile phone. He managed the yank his hand away. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get the license plate no. The thief was a teenage boy riding a Yamaha bike with an accomplice riding another bike not far behind him. They sped off. I hope that everyone walking around the area will be careful and vigilant.

GEORGE TOWN: A Penang Municipal Council worker has claimed trial at a Sessions Court to snatching the bag of a Chinese national in Love Lane here on July 2.

Abdul Waris Abdul Aziz, 32, from Air Itam, denied that he committed the offence at around 9.19pm at the roadside of Love Lane.

Sessions judge Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim set bail at RM10,000 in one surety.

The accused was not represented by counsel while DPP Maziyah Mansor prosecuted.

It was reported that a suspect was caught snatching the bag from Dai Qi, 40, a tourist from China just as her husband Luo Yong, also 40, was taking a photograph of her.

The photograph clearly showed the suspect approaching her from behind on a motorcycle and grabbing the bag.
Luo's husband then pounced on the man and shoved him off the motorcycle during the incident.
