KUANTAN: A 35-year old businesswoman narrowly escaped death when a gunman approached her Toyota Alphard and fired a shot at close range today.
However, the divorced mother of four who runs an optical store here, managed to step on the gas and sped off towards the main road and the bullet shattered her window screen.

Ruzelawati Basri of Lorong Sekilau, suffered injuries to her eye from the glass fragments and received treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here later.

In the 4am incident, the victim had earlier filled up her MPV at a petrol station and stopped about 50 metres away to make a phone call to her ex-husband in Putrajaya. The couple was divorced several months ago.

Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said the woman noticed a man getting out of a dark blue car and approached her.

"The suspect pointed a gun at her and knocked on the window to get her to open the door. Instead, she sped off, forcing him to fire a shot at her car.

"The bullet was later recovered from the front passenger's door panel.

"She continued driving for 200 meters before stopping in front of a 24-hour restaurant but waited for an hour before she could get out to seek for help," he said at a Press conference today.

He said the police were still investigating the motive behind the attack.

KUANTAN: POLICE have ascertained that the charred remains of a decapitated body, which was found near the Genting Skyway roundabout in Genting Highlands, Bentong, on Monday belong to a young woman.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said the victim's hands, feet and head were missing, and police believe the body parts were hacked off before the body was set on fire.

He said investigations revealed that the victim could have been dead for less than 48 hours.

"The body was wrapped in plastic and newspaper before the perpetrator splashed kerosene and set it on fire. Investigations revealed that the victim was decapitated elsewhere before the body was burnt at the scene.

"The victim had fair skin, but we are yet to determine if she was a local or foreigner. No identification documents were found at the scene," he said yesterday.

On Monday, a man who was relieving himself near some bushes located some 250m from Taman Gohtong Jaya made the grisly discovery at 5.15pm before he alerted the police.

A police team from Bentong rushed to the scene. The remains were brought to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here for post- mortem.

KUANTAN, June 18 (Bernama) -- Three people including a woman, who were suspected to have stolen scrap metal, were hurt after they were assaulted by residents at Felda Panching Utara here, Monday night.

Kuantan deputy police chief Supt Aziz Ahmad said the suspects, aged 20 to 26, were allegedly behaving suspiciously in a Perodua Kancil car at the Felda area in the incident at 8pm.

"The residents chased the suspects' car into a lane in the Felda scheme and surrounded them before setting upon all three.

"Police rushed to the scene after being tipped off and took the three suspects to the Panching Police Station. Half-an-hour later, about 100 people came to the station to assault the suspects but we prevented them from doing so," he told reporters here today.

He said police had received a report from a resident in the village yesterday at 5.30pm that the store at his house was broken into by thieves and a couple of items were missing.

He said all the suspects, who had past records for stealing, were sent to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. Police found the missing items in the car.
