15 held over Fatal beating of welder

KUALA TERENGGANU: Police detained 15 people in connection with the death of a welder beaten up by a group of road thugs on Aug 8 near Kampung Pak Katak here.

The 25-year-old welder from Kampung Pecah Rotan in Batu Rakit here died at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital on Tuesday after five days in a coma.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner K. Manoharan said the victim was riding his motorcycle with 15 others in Kampung Pak Katak when he was attacked by another group of youths on bikes about 5.30am.

He said the attackers accused the victim and his friends of throwing firecrackers at them.

"The victim suffered serious head injuries and bruises to his body after being hit with helmets, punched and kicked during the incident."

Manoharan said the victim's brother in-law from Kampung Bari Kecil, Permaisuri, lodged a report at a police station here on the same day.

Manoharan said the case, which was earlier investigated for causing hurt was re-classified as murder following the victim's death.

"We have arrested 15 youths, aged between 18 and 28, from here to assist in investigations."

He urged those with information about the incident to call the nearest police station.

MyWatch: Gang members recruited while still in school

PETALING JAYA: MyWatch co-founder S. Gobi Krishnan said recruitment into triad gangs start in the school compound, mainly along racial lines and at a young age.

He said boys as young as 13 or 14 years old would be offered protection from older “big brothers” of other races in the gang.

“When they turn 15, their ‘big brothers’ will give them a small amount of drugs to distribute, something smart, as police will not suspect the schoolchildren, and the boys will earn a small profit from the cut,” he said.

“Soon, they become closer to the gang and drop out of school, and the ‘big brother’ will introduce them to alcohol, girls and nightclubs,” Gobi said.

“Then, they will go on to follow the ‘big brothers’ instructions to fight or chop up someone.”

Gobi, who is also People’s Welfare and Rights Coalition (Power) president, said gangs usually targeted youths from the urban poor, who came from broken families and lived in flats near their schools, as they were the most vulnerable and accessible.

He added that when the boys turned 17, they would be initiated into the gang through a ritual.

“They would say some prayers and then someone would use a knife to cut flesh out of their hands,” Gobi added.

“And the boys need to withstand the pain to show they are strong enough to be in the gang.”

Gobi said the youths had an easier way out by joining gangs because it promised them a good life.

“The downside is that they will probably be killed if they wanted to leave,” he added.

“Unless they get caught by the police and jailed, that would be their safest exit.”

Power, a civil rights group, deals with youth gangsterism while MyWatch is a prominent anti-crime group which acted as a watchdog of the police force.

Gang 36 one of the most feared in the nation

KUALA LUMPUR: Gang 36 was originally made up of Chinese members before it was taken over by Indians to become one of the most feared secret societies in the country.

The gang’s evolution has been attributed to the growing reluctance of its Chinese founding members to get involved in the “nitty-gritty” of organised crime.

“Tired of getting their hands dirty, they recruited Indians to do it,” said a crime expert who declined to be named.

“After some time, the Chinese gangsters were outnumbered by the Indians and before long, it was being seen as an Indian gang. But that is not completely true as most gangs in Malaysia have a racially diverse membership,” he said.

The expert said there were still Chinese members in Gang 36, but they played a more passive role as “investors”. They pour money into the gang to fund its activities which allow them to double their money.

“Most of the time they would have legitimate jobs like in real estate.”

The expert said the pattern of evolution was commonly seen in many other gangs in the country.

“In the beginning, there were only Chinese gangs, which was a spillover from the triads from China,” he said.

He said the fear surrounding Gang 36 had led to many thugs just using its name to set up their own units, adding that membership was hard to verify with it being such a loose organisation.

The influx of Indians into gangs was also due to the country’s current socioeconomic climate and the unstructured nature of the criminal underworld itself, said MIC Youth chief T. Mohan.

“Poverty plays a huge role. More and more Indian youths are driven to join gangs because they feel they have no other way to make a living,” he said.

He said new gangsters claimed they belonged to a certain gang for the sake of being associated. He disagreed with talk that the current spate of shootings were coordinated assassinations in a turf war.

“The gangs are not that organised. These shootings are unrelated disputes between small groups which have a newfound freedom to use firearms,” he said.

Families Terrorized by 3 Young Men

This group of 3 young Malay robbers have been terrorizing my neighborhood (Bandar Sri Damansara) for the past few months, conducting a robbery there almost every week once.

A few days ago they robbed a neighbour at knifepoint.

Earlier today, they stalked my friend and her husband (who is a direct neighbor of the robbery victim).

First incident: They knocked the back of the husband's car. The husband quickly drove to a nearby busy petrol station which was near a police station. The 3 Malay robbers came down from the car and demanded RM1500 for the damage caused from the "accident". When the husband "offered" to pay them the money after they've gone to the police station to report about the accident, these 3 young men quickly left the scene.

Second incident: Happened shortly after the 1st incident. They stalked my friend who was driving to have breakfast. They knocked her from behind, but she was quick-thinking enough to drive into a row of busy shoplots nearby. The to-be robbers fled the scene.

They were driving the same car they used to rob the neighbor a few days back, and for the 2 incidences this morning.

Now my friend and her family fears for their safety as they have been marked by this gang.

Please be careful, and take note if there is anyone stalking you. Better be paranoid than sorry.
And I pray that these robbers rediscover their conscience as Hari Raya is tomorrow...

according to witnesses, this car frequently prowls Bandar Sri Damansara (BSD) area & BSD- Sg Buloh roads... so there might be a high chance that these robbers are local to that area."

Hilux gang strikes in Kampar, shoots and injures shopkeeper, son

IPOH: The Hilux gang struck in Kampar near here, shooting and injuring a shopkeeper and his son but failed to get away with his Toyota Hilux vehicle.

The gang of three, however, succeeded in driving off with another Hilux vehicle 30 minutes later by bundling the owner out of the car and driving off in it.

Police managed to arrest one of the gang members at a road block later.

The 51-year-old shopkeeper and his son, 13, were shot in the stomach and thigh respectively after the suspects rushed into his house in Taman Sejahtera at about 8.30pm on Sunday.

Perak deputy police chief Datuk A. Paramasivam said the victim, his wife and two sons were in the living room when the three men in ski-masks and armed with machetes and a pistol entered their house.

The victim's Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive was believed to be their main target. The group took mobile phones, identity cards, bank and cheque books from the house and was about to leave in the victim's Hilux.

"As one of the suspects was starting the engine when the victim launched an attack with a machete. But another suspect opened fire hitting the victim in the stomach and his son in the thigh," Paramasivam said.

The suspects left without the Hilux and escaped in their own getaway car, a dark-colored Proton Perdana.

Barely 30 minutes later, they robbed another Hilux owner of his vehicle, mobile phones, gold chain, pendant and RM6,000 in cash.

"They pulled the man, 31, from the Hilux and sped off in it while one of the suspects followed in the Perdana," Paramasivam said. The victim was unharmed.


Two hours later, however, the suspect driving the Perdana car was captured at a police road block at Jalan Ayer Kuning, Tapah. Documents and valuables belonging to the first victim were found in the car which was reported stolen at Bukit Puchong recently.

Paramasivam said the 33-year-old suspect from Taman Orkid, Teluk Intan was warded at a hospital with leg and head injuries. He has prior criminal records.

The group is believed to be involved in 10 cases of Hilux four-wheel drive thefts.

"We have identified the other two suspects still at large, they're from Perak. We urge anyone with related information to contact the police station," Paramasivam said.

巴生商家投訴，一群紅包黨趕搭新春尾班車，在農曆新年前一週大舉出動，手持年柑和肉乾上門向商家討紅包。商家申訴，紅包黨雖一改兇神惡煞的態度，以溫和及帶笑的態度向他們鳩收紅包，而且還讓商家自行“選擇”要以紅包換取年柑或肉乾，但商家深知這是“鱷魚的微笑”，為免私會黨徒日後“秋後算賬”，到店裡鬧事或砸椅砸凳，他們還是被迫乖乖付紅包“消災”。商家披露，紅包“金額”約介於50至100令吉，但一些紅包黨成員卻獅子開大口，要求商家以200、240或360令吉的紅包錢換取一包肉乾或幾粒年柑。
