JOHOR BARU: A group of thieves set a house on fire at Taman Sri Putri in Skudai in a bid to eliminate any trace of evidence.

It is learnt that they carted away over RM90,000 in jewellery and cash that were kept in the house before setting it on fire at about 4pm on Thursday.

Retiree Poh Qing Fei, 60, said that he, his ex-wife and son were not at home when the thieves struck.

“I was out of town, visiting my brother in Muar and my ex-wife was out shopping at that time,” he said, adding that his son was at work.

Poh said he was informed of the incident yesterday by his younger brother, who lived nearby.

“When I arrived home, I was shocked to see the inside of my house almost completely burnt.’

“Following inspection, we realised that our jewellery worth about RM50,000 were stolen,” he said.

Johor Baru North deputy OCPD Supt Beh Eng Lai said police were investigating the case.

“We believe that the thieves had burnt the house just to cover up their act,” he said.

Supt Beh said the case had been classified as burglary, besides causing mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a house under the Penal Code.
