Brutally-caned five-year-old girl now in ICU

IPOH: A five-year-old girl, suspected of having been brutally caned by her mother in Taman Wang, Menglembu, has been warded in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said a doctor at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital lodged a report on the matter on Friday evening.

He said the girl had cane marks all over her body and head.

"She is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit. Investigation into matter is ongoing," he said.

ACP Sum said following the report, police detained the parents at their home at about 1.30pm.

The girl was brought to the hospital by her 39-year-old father.

It is learnt that she was caned by her 30-year-old mother for "being mischievous."

IPOH: The parents of a five-year-old girl, who is on life support after being brutally caned, have been remanded for three days.

On Saturday, Magistrate Rahimah Rahim issued the three-day remand order ending Monday at the magistrate's court here.

Confirming that police had obtained a three-day remand order against the 30-year-old mother and 39-year-old father, Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said the case was being investigated as causing grievous hurt under Section 325 of the Penal Code.

It was reported that the girl's father had taken her to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here after she collapsed from high fever on Thursday.

She had visible cane marks, bruises and lacerations all over her body and head.

The girl's condition prompted a doctor to make a report to the police at the hospital police beat, leading to the arrest of the couple at their home in Taman Wang, Menglembu here, the next day.

It is believed that the mother had caned the girl, said to be a special needs child, over her "mischievous" behaviour.

Neighbours at the couple's home remained tight-lipped when approached by The Star.

They, however, revealed that the girl was a quiet child.

"I've heard from neighbours that the girl often hurts herself by hitting her own head against the wall.

"But I've never seen it with my own eyes," one neighbour claimed.

When contacted, state Women Development, Family, Community Welfare and National Integration committee chairman Datuk Rusnah Kassim said the couple's other son and daughter, aged seven and two, had been taken into the care of the state Welfare Department.

"They are currently under welfare protection.

"Both children have been placed at a children's shelter and are doing well.
"However, they appear to be traumatised over the incident," she said.

Man survives four shots by motorcycle assassins

IPOH: A 29-year-old man was shot four times in his Hyundai Atos by two assailants on a motorcycle near Taman Klebang Putra in Chemor near here late Wednesday night.

OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said the man was driving in the car in the housing area when the assailants rode up near the vehicle and fired at least six shots at about 11.15pm.

"The man was driving with two people inside the car, believed to be his family members.

"The two are unharmed during the incident," he told journalists after attending a Hari Raya open house at the Pekan Baru police station on Thursday morning.

ACP Sum said police found six slugs on the road where the incident took place.

"The assailants wore full-face helmets and no one was able to determine who they were.

"The victim has been hospitalised after the attack with his condition stable and not critical," he said.

ACP Sum said the victim is believed to be not from Ipoh, noting that the incident was still being investigated.

"The victim is in no condition to talk and we will get some statements from him later," he said.

"We have only received one police report from a witness now," he added.

IPOH: Two men with severe neck and face injuries were found dead next to each other here.

Acting Ipoh OCPD Supt Ahmad Termizi Abdul Haq said the police discovered the half-naked bodies of S. Kaviventhen, 28, and S. Chandrasekhar, 26, at 8.30am near Taman Desa Seri Ampang on Monday.

He said the police suspected that the victims’ necks had been stabbed and their faces beaten repeatedly with blunt objects.

“We are still not sure if the two victims were killed on the same day.

“Our forensic unit is carrying out investigations to find out the actual cause of death,” he told reporters at the district police station.
He added that the bodies of Kaviventhen and Chandrasekhar, who were from Ipoh, have been sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for post-mortem.

IPOH: Three men armed with knives robbed a cigarette van driver and his assistant of RM10,000 and cigarettes worth RM20,000 at Taman Mas, Kuala Kuang, here yesterday.

Ipoh district deputy police chief Superintendent Anuar Othman said the victims were unloading supplies to a sundry shop at 12.15pm when the robbers approached them.

He said the robbers threatened to harm the victims before one of them got into the van and sped off from the scene.

"The remaining robbers escaped in a car. Police recovered the van without the supplies in Taman Meru Perdana, which is 20 km away, several hours later," he said yesterday.

Anuar said the robbers also took RM80 and handphones from the victims, but did not harm them.

IPOH: In just two hours, a group of five robbers broke into a house in Tapah and robbed it, attacked a couple before moving on to rob a Hindu temple next to it.

At about 3am Monday, the masked robbers in black, armed with parangs, broke into a house in Kampung Pahang and slashed A. Murthy, 55, and his wife M. Danaletchumi, 50.

Their daughter M. Prema, 25, said the group first barged into the room where her mother and brother M. Napakumar, 15, were sleeping and tied them up.

“One of them asked: where are the priests? Any valuable items in the house?”

“My mother told them that there was no priest in the house and we are just a poor family,” she told reporters at her house on Monday.

Prema said one of them then hit her mother's head with the handle of the parang and cut her thumb.

“My father, who was sleeping alone in another room, was awoken by the commotion and came to have a look.

“They went up to him and slashed his back, arms and legs,” she said.

She said her parents were sent to the Teluk Intan hospital for treatment.

Tapah OCPD Supt Somsak Din Keliau said the family had lodged a police report.

He said the suspects stole about RM600 cash money and two mobile phones from the house.

“It is believed that the same suspects broke into the temple next to the house.”

Supt Somsak said the group gathered three Hindu priests in a room and tied them up.

“They took away two gold rings, a locket, seven mobile phones and RM2,000 cash money,” he said, adding that the estimated loss was about RM12,000.

Chenderiang assemblyman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who visited the family and the temple, said he was shocked by the robbers' cruelty.

“The police are investigating,” he said, adding that he would visit the injured couple in the hospital.

IPOH - A German tourist, who had just arrived here from Singapore, was assaulted by two men who tried to rob him yesterday morning.

Michael Peter Hem, 28, suffered cuts to his hands and legs, and fractured his right arm in the 12.30am incident which occurred near a budget hotel at the Ipoh old town area.

He lodged a report at the police beat base at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital at 4pm after receiving treatment at the hospital.

When met by reporters, Hem declined to be interviewed, but allowed himself to be photographed.

He was later brought by policemen to the Ipoh district police headquarters to have his statement recorded.

Speaking to reporters at the police beat base, Hem's friend, S. Ravindran, said the victim was walking back to the hotel after calling him (Ravindran) from a public telephone booth when he was waylaid.

Ravindran, 31, said the suspects initially assaulted Hem with a bottle, but later slashed him with a knife after the victim tried to fight off the robbers.

"They fled on a scooter after the victim shouted for help. They failed to take any of his belongings."

Ravindran said Hem then called the police for assistance and he was brought to the hospital by an ambulance.
