KUALA TERENGGANU: Police detained 15 people in connection with the death of a welder beaten up by a group of road thugs on Aug 8 near Kampung Pak Katak here.
The 25-year-old welder from Kampung Pecah Rotan in Batu Rakit here died at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital on Tuesday after five days in a coma.
State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner K. Manoharan said the victim was riding his motorcycle with 15 others in Kampung Pak Katak when he was attacked by another group of youths on bikes about 5.30am.
He said the attackers accused the victim and his friends of throwing firecrackers at them.
"The victim suffered serious head injuries and bruises to his body after being hit with helmets, punched and kicked during the incident."
Manoharan said the victim's brother in-law from Kampung Bari Kecil, Permaisuri, lodged a report at a police station here on the same day.
Manoharan said the case, which was earlier investigated for causing hurt was re-classified as murder following the victim's death.
"We have arrested 15 youths, aged between 18 and 28, from here to assist in investigations."
He urged those with information about the incident to call the nearest police station.
