KULIM: A MOBILE phone dealer, who was shot on Tuesday, may have cheated death but faces possible paralysis.

The future of the 26-year-old, battling for his life at the intensive care unit at Kulim Hospital, is uncertain.

A doctor told the New Straits Times yesterday that the man's condition was critical but stable.

"The shrapnel from the bullet has injured his spinal cord.

"He may not be able to walk again.

"Things are not looking good for him, but his life is not in danger."

The doctor said despite the multiple injuries to the man's body, his right lung was functioning.

He said the bullet penetrated his left shoulder and exited through his right lung, crippling his nerve system.

In the 8pm incident here, two motorcyclists with full-faced helmets had barged into a bungalow in Taman Pondok Labu.

A police spokesman said the phone dealer, who is single, was watching television in the living room with six family members when the duo entered the house.

"Spotting the duo, the phone dealer tried to run into a room to hide.

"The duo told the victim to stay in the living room."

One of them whipped out a pistol and fired at him.
Police classified the case under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

He said initial investigations showed the victim did not have any criminal record. The family members could not be reached for comment.

No arrests have been made and police have yet to determine the motive behind the shooting.
