Excuses?
ONE OF THE EXCUSE
Spike in Selangor crime due to EO repeal, says deputy CPO
By Ida Lim / Malaysian Insider
June 30, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — Selangor’s deputy police chief today suggested the repeal of the Emergency Ordinance (EO) may have caused a hike in the state’s crime rate due to the number of suspects who could have returned to a life of felony instead of reforming.
Last September, the federal government repealed the controversial EO, a security law introduced after the 1969 race riots that allowed the authorities to detain a person without trial for up to two years, similar to the much-criticised Internal Security Act (ISA).
It was usually used on hardcore gangsters but had also been used on children who were held in the same detention facilities as adults.
“But we see there is a rise in crime (recently) because they’ve been in (detention) for too long, they need ‘exercise’, so they come out and immediately they carry out their activities,” Selangor’s deputy commissioner of police, A. Thaiveegan, was reported as saying by news portal Malaysiakini today.
He was earlier reported to have said the government had released the EO detainees to give them a second chance, but was now uncertain if they had returned “to the right path”.
“There may be one or two cases here and there which we are handling. There could be reasons why there is a sudden surge. There are a few criminals who have returned to society and they may take time to change (their ways).
“I can’t confirm yet (because of the EO). It could be, but we will need time to confirm that. Give us another month or two then we will confirm,” Thaiveegan was reported adding.
The website quoted the senior policeman as saying that even though statistics showed the crime rate in Malaysia’s most developed state had dropped by 11.2 per cent, the public was still dissatisfied with the result.
A spate of high-profile kidnap attempts and robberies — some of them armed — targeting individuals, businesses and even hospitals has raised concern over public safety nationwide.
Last week, a woman was slashed in the head in the car park of the popular Mid Valley Megamall in the Klang Valley, the third reported case in a month of armed robbers seemingly targeting lone women that garnered wide media coverage.
Earlier this month, thieves carted off millions of ringgit in high-end medical gear from several hospitals around the Klang Valley, including from the public-funded University Malaya Medical Centre.
Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, has said that the country’s crime rate is not on the rise despite growing concern over public safety, saying that two recent violent crime cases were “isolated” incidents.
PEMANDU, the government’s efficiency unit tasked with reducing the crime rate under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP), had insisted that there has been a drastic drop in such incidences and pointed instead to “unfortunate” media coverage.
But a federal lawmaker from Selangor had questioned the effectiveness of the GTP which singles out Malaysia’s richest state as a ‘hotspot’ for crime reduction after the Home Ministry said crime in Selangor had risen by nearly 12 per cent between 2010 and 2011 or the equivalent of a rise of 39,691 cases to 44,302.
The Home Ministry quickly issued a correction but Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua found that this was at least the third set of crime figures released for his state recently, creating further doubt over the accuracy of the government’s statistics.
But Pua, DAP’s publicity chief, had called on the Home Ministry and PEMANDU to “stop blaming crime on ‘perception’.”
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had two weeks ago said that more must be done to increase public safety, giving his assurance that the government was concerned with “all kinds of violence, including against women”, despite saying that the country’s general crime rate had dipped considerably.

Car Jacking on Kesas Highway
Guys.. beware.. I was driving along Kesas highway in heavy traffic at 6.40am today when a proton wira (no car plate number) rammed into a lady driving a Toyota Prius from the back.
The passenger in the proton wira (there was 3 of them in the car) got out of the and forced the lady out (threatening to smash the window) before pulling her daughter's hair to get her out of the car as well...
They drove off with the Prius and attempted to knock down the lady and her daughter in the process. I passed by and was flagged down by the lady for help (I witness it myself when the proton wira tried running down the lady and her daughter)
We proceed to the Subang Jaya SS17 polis station and there was another 2 lady victims who just encountered the SAME fate as the lady who flagged me down, at just about the same time!
This happened in full view of people, in heavy traffic... no one stopped to helped!
Should you ever get hit by another car,
1. PLEASE DO NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!
2. SHOULD YOU BE THREATEN IN A VIOLENT MANNER OR THEY THREATEN TO SMASH YOUR CAR WINDOW OR HARM YOU, RUN THEM DOWN WITH YOUR CAR (gently, but required, knock them hard!) IF YOU HAVE TO IN ORDER TO SAFE YOUR LIFE!
3. HONKED REALLY LOUD TO GET ATTENTION (But i doubt all these selfish people will actually stop to help you)
Take care guys.... things are really, really bad.....

CHERAS: A routine breakfast stop at his in-laws turned into a harrowing experience for James Lam and his family.
The family of four walked into a robbery and were themselves robbed of RM50,000 in Taman Midah on Tuesday.
They had gone to his in-laws' house next door as they do every morning.
“At 7am, I entered the house as usual through an adjoining door when I noticed a white car parked in front of the gate. But I did not suspect anything,” said Lam, 44, who works in advertising.
As he entered the house with his wife and son, one of the robbers hiding behind the door suddenly grabbed them and warned them not to shout.
“He told us that they only wanted our valuables and then took us upstairs to where my wife's parents and brother were being held.
“They were dressed in black from head to toe and holding parang. They wore black jackets, black gloves, and black ski masks. All we could see were their eyes,” said Lam.
At the same time, he said he was worried about his five-year-old son who was with them. His younger son, two, was asleep in his room throughout the incident.
Lam said after robbing his in-laws, the robbers also ransacked his bedroom, taking with them cash, ten watches, four mobile telephones and jewellery.

Dear Friends,
I just got my windscreen fixed today. Pls spent some time to read on & share out to your loved one to increase public awareness.
On Day 15th of Chinese New Year(Chinese calendar Valentine Day), Me , my husband Yip & my girl Xin Yu (7 years old) go through a Unforgettable Morning in Kota Damansara. We almost got Robbed at seksyen 4 'Shell petrol kiosk ' the one opposite Petronas near Tropicana Medical Centre !
We scheduled to reach kelana jaya Lrt at 6 am, we leave from home around 5.40am, half way, my husband felt my car tyre don't have sufficient air, he stop by Shell seksyen 4 to pump at 5.50am. There is no one there except 2 foreigner worker in the shop( the shop was locked).
When my husband come down from the car, I immediately locked the car door(that is what I usually practice). He just started to pump, came a motorbike with 2 Malay guys, one of them come near my husband ,.. Telling him " jangan bising! Wallet mari!" At the same time showing him the motor tyre lock in his hand, if my husband refuse, he will use that to attack him. When I saw the Malay guy get near him, I felt very uneasy in my heart, everything happen so fast, in split second, i saw my husband shouting while running ask me to go!(drive away)..he run away bcoz he know I already locked my car & there is no chance for him to come in bcoz the robber are too near my car.By running away he hope to lead the robber to chase him & to be away from us but when the robber saw him run so fast, he come back to attack my car, he uses the motorbike tyre lock & bang on my driver side window,in few seconds time, I manage to jump from the front passenger seat to the driver seat & on the second bang, I manage to reverse my car& go( thanks to my 8 mil tinted film , it save our family life, at least it last 2 knock, it buy me some time to drive away).i then drive towards my husband direction, it was so scary...at that time, my right side view is totally out bcoz of the cracked window, I can't open the door even my husband was nearby coz the robber was really near him, it will endanger him as well, so while he is running towards the counter , I try to escort him there, I drove pass the counter but to my suprise the Shell staff did not even help to open the door, they just stood inside & watch. I stop my car , ..feeling very scare bcoz I can't see my husband,..my daughter at the back of the car cried very loud when she saw that both the robber now are on the motorbike chasing my husband the opposite way, she cried "pa pa", hearing her crying ,..my fear from level 10 change mode immediately to Anger level 10. Immediately, I reverse my car & in my heart , if those robbers ever touch my husband I will bang them with my car if I need to! Seeing my car coming very fast towards their motor bike, the 2 Robbers run away & I quickly open the door for my husband & we are safe. Thank you God for protecting us despite just minor external injury of my husband Yip, bcoz he fall while they chase him & me twisted my right hand for turning the wheel super fast. We make police report after that & go to tropicana medical centre to get treatment. Moral of the story, be very alert & careful whenever you are irregardless of petrol kiosk or public places especially car park that are quiet, day or night. I would like to take this chance to thank God again for giving me & my husband Yip & my children another chance to live this life again. Thank you so much :)

FEEL SAFER: Kiosk directly linked to Johor police HQ
JOHOR BARU: SECURITY at Iskandar Malaysia has been given a boost with the installation of an interactive kiosk in the heart of the city centre here, yesterday. This is the second kiosk of its kind in the country, the first being in Penang.
Installed at the Jalan Wong Ah Fook-Jalan Station junction, the kiosk is meant for the public to call the police in case of an emergency.Johor Baru City Council mayor Burhan Amin said the kiosk was part of the "safe city" programmes aimed at enhancing the city centre's image and security.
The project complements existing security measures, such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, lamp posts, safety signboards, safety mirrors, road bumpers and pedestrian paths.
"The previous security measures had managed to bring down the crime rate last year by almost 10 per cent, compared with 2011.
"I believe the new kiosk can further instil confidence in visitors here with regard to the level of safety in the city.
"This is in line with our aspiration to make Johor Baru a global city by 2020," Burhan said after a ceremony to hand over the kiosk to the Johor police yesterday.
Present was Johor Baru South deputy police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Salleh. The kiosk costs RM120,000 and was funded by the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
In case of an emergency, one only has to stand close to the kiosk, press a button and speak directly into its intercom. The kiosk is directly linked to the Johor police headquarters.A police officer will then speak with the complainant, in the style of a teleconference.A police team will then be sent to the kiosk immediately to assist in the situation.
Burhan said the council hoped to install more of such kiosks in strategic areas throughout the city.
"I hope the people will make full use of the facility and maintain it properly. Avoid making crank calls or risk legal action if you do so, as the kiosk is monitored by a CCTV."
