BRAVE ACT: Man catches up with one but duo manage to flee with jewellery worth RM200,000
SELAYANG: AN eyewitness to a robbery risked his life when he went after two armed robbers following a heist at a goldsmith's shop in Selayang Baru, here, yesterday morning.
Mohd Zaki Alias, a worker of a neighbouring goldsmith's shop on Jalan 11, spotted the two robbers, armed with parang, leaving the adjacent shop after taking three trays containing jewellery worth RM200,000.
"I heard cries for help and saw the two men, clad in T-shirts and vests with helmets, rushing out towards the back lane.
"Without a second thought, I rushed after them," said the 23-year-old.
"They were running towards their Honda EX5 motorcycle, which was parked 100m from the shop.
"I managed to catch up with one of the robbers. There was a struggle and I tore off his vest. I shouted for help but by then, the robbers had fled with the loot.
Zaki said he was thankful he was not hurt despite the robbers being armed.
It is learnt there are six jewellery shops in the area.
The owner of the shop which was robbed, Che Som Che Wel, 44, said she was behind the grilled counter talking to her friend when two men rushed into the premises.
"They were armed with a hammer and a parang and without saying anything, they broke the glass display and grabbed three trays of gold chains."
She said this was the first time her shop was robbed since setting up the business 10 years ago.
"The whole thing was over in a flash," Che Som said.
There were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the shop.
Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Abdullah said they have obtained CCTV footage from another shop. He declined to elaborate as investigations were under way.
The shop was located about 20m from the Selayang Baru police base.
