ATM robbery foiled when rope snaps

The Star 23/6/13

MUAR: Three robbers, who tried to pull an automated teller machine (ATM) out of a bank using a four-wheel drive, fled when the rope that they were using snapped.

The robbers, who were all wearing helmets, had earlier sprayed paint on a CCTV camera outside the bank before trying to pull out the ATM at about 5.30am yesterday.

A stall operator, who was about to open her stall near the bank, heard the sound of glass breaking and told her husband about the noise.

She said that she saw two men at the bank and a black four-wheel drive vehicle trying to pull the ATM out of the bank.

The trader, who only wanted to be known as Liza, said that the robbers fled when the rope they were using snapped.

Meanwhile, Muar police chief Asst Comm Azman Ayob said that the police had detained two men near the bank.

In George Town, a group of thieves abandoned their attempt to break into an ATM at Jalan Masjid Negeri after they were spotted by a passer-by.

The four thieves were spotted by a man, who subsequently called the police.

Policemen from the Kampung Baru police station then rushed to the scene.

However, the thieves managed to escape by driving off in a white Toyota Vios.

Forensic personnel later found a finger print on a glass panel.

They also found that the iron grille of one of the ATMs was cut during the incident.

The incident occurred at about 3am on Friday.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said that the suspects left behind their equipment and tools at the scene in their haste to escape.

Police, he added, also found four oxy-acetylene gas tanks, a plastic bag containing a piece of canvas and other tools like screwdrivers and pliers.
