SHAH ALAM, June 6 (Bernama) -- A man and his wife, believed to have frequented houses of worships to steal, were detained at their rented house in Kampung Bukit Badong, Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor near here yesterday.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department head SAC Adnan Abdullah said the couple were arrested at 2.30pm following a report by a 23-year-old student who lost her bag at a surau of a shopping complex at Bandar Bukit Raja, Klang, last May 11.

"The student had left the bag on a prayer mat to perform the ablution and then found it missing," he told a media conference here today.

The bag contained RM200, personal documents, handphone and her car key.

He said the man, aged 28, and his 26-year-old wife had a four-year-old adopted daughter.

Police searched the house and found several items, including handphones, handbags and Touch n Go cards, believed to have been stolen, he added.

He said police also believed that the couple had sold some of the stolen items, and also destroyed, by burning, items like credit cards, at two locations in the vicinity of their house.

Following their arrest, police believed they had been able to resolve 15 cases of theft reported in Selangor, especially in surau at bus and taxi terminals and shopping complexes.
